HelmetHair. It’s a never ending battle. For many women with long hair, it’s always a struggle. You either have to braid it, wear it in a pony tail, wear a bandanna, a long head scarf, or some other contraption to keep it all under control under your helmet. That’s one of the main reasons why I keep my hair short. Other than how much I love the way I look! It helps minimize the HelmetHair. But I still have the problem of taking off my helmet and then seeing the patterns of my EPS liner imprinted on my head. I don’t think there is a cure 100% of the time, but the founder of DannaBand has tried to come up with a solution to help win the war against HelmetHair. I’ve worn balaclavas, bandannas and head wraps. By far, the DannaBand is the most comfortable, (and the cutest!) accessory I’ve tried. I also had a fellow female rider say that she enjoys the feel of letting her hair out after she gets off the bike and takes off her helmet. There’s something truly sexy about seeing a woman get off of her sportbike, take off her helmet, and see all the beautiful, gorgeous hair flowing behind her. It’s certainly a mystique of the ‘Biker’ look. (I’m no biker, btw, I’m more of a motorcyclist. But that’s a different, much longer post for later). If you share this opinion, I think the DannaBand is something that would work since it doesn’t fully cover up or constrict your hair, but will manage it under the helmet while keeping your locks flowing freely in the wind behind you.

I normally wear a regular bandanna under my motorcycle helmet and was asked to try out the DannaBand instead. I’m happy to report that I love it and prefer it over my 2 bandannas. The process of tying it and retying it is annoying for me, and I love the ease of on and off.  It just slips on over your hair with very little effort.  The band is also elastic (fully covered in the fabric of your choice), and should adjust to fit all head shapes and sizes. It’s not super tight, but not super loose. It tends to come off when I take off the helmet. I don’t want something that tight wrapped around my head anyways.

Aside from the plethora of patterns that you can order from the website, you can also submit your own fabric and have them make a band out of that instead! They even have a Sport line, made with moisture wicking materials.  I went with the Blue Zen Flower pattern and really like the way it looks and feels.

I have short hair so it’s far less of a problem under my helmet than it is for many of you with long hair, but I still have occasional helmet hair.  I will say that this band helps me manage HelmetHair about 90% of the time. It’s only when I leave with my hair a little wet that it’ll come out looking super funky.  But I don’t think that’s the fault of DannaBand, or any bandanna for that matter. Unfortunately, because my hair is so short in the back, the band is always showing. If you have long hair, it will be hidden at the base of your neck. But for me, any kind of bandanna will look funky from the back.   So my only wish is that it had a smaller, thinner elastic band. But even with this detail, I still think it’s a better option. I think the DannaBand would be great for any woman who is active and would like something to help manage her hair while she’s bicycling, jogging, or whatever, will find the DannaBand useful as well.

If you’re looking for something that isn’t as long as a Buff, but not a bandanna, I suggest you check out the DannaBand as an option.

I’ll be posting this on my Reviews page next week along with more photos.

Bikes and Bluegrass Festival!

If you love classic motorcycles and/or bluegrass music, then you’re going to love this event coming to Frenchtown, NJ on May 8, 2010! I met someone by the name of William Shelton,  who runs ArtoftheBike.com, a site that designs really cool vintage tees back at the NYC motorcycle show. He was kind enough to invite me to be a vendor at the show, but NJ is just a touch too far for me to travel these days.

The festival is going to be presented by Art of the Bike and is sure to have great vendors and a variety of local riding groups representing. If you go, please tell Bill I said hi!

DC, NYC, now Cleveland

It’s been a crazy month.  I’ve never traveled this much before in my life.  I’m kind of enjoying it. Even if my body still thinks I’m on the East Coast.

I’ve met so many interesting, exciting people.  Mingling with the motorcycle industry has been my dream for so long.  My dream would be to work fully in a motorcycle capacity and never go back to a finance/technology/blah blah blah company ever again.

I have 3 shows left, I don’t know what I’ll do with myself once I’m back at home.  Oh yeah, keep up with my website! With only 2 days home every week, and working nonstop from the minute my plane hits the ground, it’s been difficult for me to keep things up to date.  (Big, huge, ginormous apologies to my newsletter subscribers!) I’m truly, truly sorry and will try to at least post some short and sweet updates every week.

I have a few shout-outs, so to speak, on some cool companies that I’ve met this month. First, in Greenville, I must give a big thanks to Donnie Unger, the Owner of Duc Pond Motorsports in Winchester, VA! I scored the gorgeous Ducati bag above at the Greenville show, and wouldn’t be looking as good without it.  Thanks Donnie!!  I’ve already customized it. :D The DucPond also carries one of my favorite brands, REV’IT, so stop in and see them if you’re in the Greenville, SC area.

In NYC, I met Todd McNabney, the founder of Heroic Racing. It’s so hard to find one piece suits for women, off the rack.  And it’s even harder to find dealers that actually carry them! Gloves are a tough one too, especially real race gloves for those of you who love track days. (Which I fiercely avoid, since I KNOW that I’ll become addicted. All I’ll want to do is race and I just can’t do that right now).

As soon as I passed by the Heroic booth, I had to stop and smell the roses.  I’m a huge fan of black and white when it comes to gear.   The first thing that caught my eye, and I’m sure yours too, especially in the pics above, is the agressive gauntlet.  Most people wouldn’t want something that ‘crazy’. Even myself, I only wear Racer High End gloves, which I wouldn’t wear on the track, but trust on the street.

I hope to get in touch with Todd sometime over the next month or two and do an in depth review and interview about these gloves, as well as the suit.  Unfortunately, by the time I went over to take a pic of the suit, he had the nerve to sell it to a needful woman who needed a suit! I hope she’s thrilled with it. If it fits nearly as hot as it looked, she’ll be utterly satisifed.

Speaking of suits, I’m going to see Michael, one of the founders of Veloce about the new women’s Achillia suit and boots! I can’t wait, and hope to post something in 2 weeks.

The other cool thing I saw was a collection of motorcycle inspired tees from Art of the Bike,   Although he doesn’t have a lof of “women’s tees”, I really loved the designs, and especially the use of Alternative Apparel organic tees.  Now, if only I could get a Norton….

I think one of the best things I’ve been able to see so far, is all the cool women who stop by the Women’s Center.  If you’re a woman, and you have questions about riding motorcycles, but don’t have anyone to talk to except your SO/Husband/Boyfriend/Male Friends, come to the Center!! We’re here to talk about Anything related to riding.  The 2 amazing women I’ve come to know and love have more than a million miles of combined riding experience.  Sue Slate and Gin Shear are the founders of the Women’s Motorcyclist Foundation, The work they’ve done in recent years to help find a cure for Breast Cancer is unbelievable.  We’re also giving seminars (not for women only) on everything from taking your first MSF class, to Dual Sport Riding, to Gear (how to shop!), Twisties, choosing the Right Bike, and More.

Of course, I’m going to brag about me too and tell you that if you wish you could have a personal shopper help identify what sizes/fits/cuts work for you, then the IMS is the perfect opportunity!

New GearChic store on Spreadshirt

Some of you have asked me when will I have more shirts from my first design. Well, I thought I would experiment with a shop on Spreadshirt.com:

http://gearchic.spreadshirt.com/us/US/Shop/

I’ve uploaded a couple of simple design options with my first design and my logo, along with an experimental dog tshirt design for those of you who love your furry pups as much as I love mine.  I hope to add more designs and shirts as I go along.

Quick Shout Out

Big thanks to Simon’s Auto Werks in Pacifica, CA for carrying my new tshirts.

Thanks Simon!!

And another thanks to those of you who’ve signed up for my forums. Too bad I had to ban someone for posting Windows ads. Don’t you realize that PCs suck? Maybe if you posted OS X or Macbook Pro ads I wouldn’t have had to do that.

Motorcycle Show and TShirts

Well it’s been a busy December. I have new shirts ready to go, but haven’t had time to take any pictures of them!! How bad is that?

Well if you want to see them and possibly get one (for $24) at the International Motorcycle Show in San Mateo, CA this weekend, I’ll be in the HUB giving a seminar on “Dress for the Ride”. Basically I’ll be giving my advice on what you should be wearing when you ride and some shopping tips while looking for gear.

I hope to meet lots of you! Tonight is ladies night, half off admission!! I’ll be speaking at the following times this weekend:

Friday (tonight) 6:30-7:00pm
Saturday 3:30pm-4:00pm
Sunday 12:00-12:30pm

Tshirts, Take 2

Well I’ve finally started on a new idea for the next round of shirts. I think this one is definitely better than the last one. My designer and I are still finalizing the graphic, but this will give you a good idea of what I’ve been up to:

I’m hoping to get this on a dark gray, vneck tee like this one :

I thought it would be a good idea to go in a simpler direction this time around. I have to give big thanks to my friend, Aleks for helping me design this. If you need a wonderful designer and illustrator, please let her know!

Let me know your thoughts!

Tshirts $$ Reduced and New Love

I’ve reduced the price to $24.00 (includes free first class mail)! I’m trying to get a new design going, but can’t do that until these are gone.

Sizes: S, M, L, XL

Email me with your address and size!

Ok, now onto new love. My newest crush is on this jacket:

Rev’it Pearl ($310 US):

http://www.rev-it.co.uk/usrimage/pearl%20black%20f.jpg

She looks much better in person and on the upper half of my body! It has a full removable liner and what you can sort of see is the flap in front that goes over the front zipper so as to keep the water and wind out. Oh yes. I like the light gray one as well. Not sure how well I could keep that clean. I’m looking to replace the unisex Rev’it jacket that I bought 3 years ago. It has served me well, numerous trips down South and keeping me warm in the city and around the Bay Area. It’s fully waterproof (built into the outer shell) but I always feel like the michelin man when I wear it. It doesn’t taper at all at the waist and I have to cinch it tighter, which makes it a little poofier up top than I’d like. No matter how tightly I secure the neck (velcro strap), I always manage to get air down the front of my chest. Which is the last place you want a windtunnel to be forming while going down the freeway at 70mph.

A good textile jacket should hug you in all the right places. If you have to cinch it down all the way at the waist to fit you, then you need a slightly more fitted jacket, or the next size down. This is already an XS (Unisex, not women’s).

Hopefully I’ll have this jacket soon and can take some before/after pics.
