At the Women's Sportbike Rally West in July, we had a really great workshop with the owner of Motorcycle Service Centers, LLC in Camarillo, CA. (an excellent metric or harley shop in the Ventura County Area The topic was "How Not to Get Ripped Off by a Motorcycle Shop". It was one of the most informative workshops I've ever attended. Thanks Will!

His main message was "Care and Feeding of your Best Friend" :D How many of us think of our motorcycles as family members? LOL. I know I do. (we are childless so for us it's furry kids and moto kids). His very first tip (out of 5) was to Keep Your Bike Clean, and here's why: 

Nothing tells a shop that you are knowledgeable and actually care about your bike like showing up with a bike that is clean. Clean wheels, clean bodywork, a windscreen you can see through, no covering of dirt and grime. If you're new to riding and aren't quite sure about things, getting to know your ride up close is important. I am so lazy when it comes to cleaning Goldie and keeping her nice and shiny.

But I'm hoping with this awesome care package from MucOff, it'll help me keep Goldie looking like she's 2012 again. 

I got a thorough list of goodies including:

  • Chain lube (wet and dry)
  • Degreaser (always an important first step before lubrication)
  • Motorcycle Protectant
  • Nanotech Motorcycle Cleaner
  • Matte Finish Detailer
  • Chain Brush
  • Soft Washing Brushes, Microfiber Cloth and Chain Cleaning Brushes
  • Antifog spray and Goggle/Lens Cleaner

Now I have ZERO excuses for not keeping everything looking pristine. See how disgusting my wheels look? See that awesome clean patch? Normally I use Simple Green to wipe down my wheels but I thought I would give their "Motorcycle Protectant" a try; its like the 409 of motorcycle cleaners. One spray, and then one wipe and it perfectly removed my brake dust. LOVE it. 

I'll admit I haven't used the entire kit yet, but I can't wait until it's not 1,000 degrees anymore so I can sit in my garage without melting to give her a long overdue wash. I'm on my way to the Iron Horse Motorcycle Lodge near Deals Gap, NC for the Women's Sportbike Rally so I hope the rain doesn't stick around too much so I can give Goldie a good top to bottom scrub. 

But at home, I don't have a hose hookup so using some of these products is really helpful (meh, condos). With just the Protectant I can clean her up top to bottom in a pinch.  If you do want to give your bike a full wash, they offer a Nano Tech Bike Wash (instead of say, dish soap).

One of my other favorites is the Foam Fresh.

I like to clean my helmet liners every month or so during peak sweaty, humid, hot riding seasons. The Foam Fresh is perfect for that.  Did I mention how much I love Citrus Scents? 

Normally you can hand wash your liners but I am #lazy so I'd rather take them out, then spray and wipe clean to air dry. 

These are just a few of my favorites from their collection I'm excited to use.

Replacement Knee Armor Revised

Awhile back, I had a post about replacement knee armor options. And at the time, Forcefield still made an option that is now discontinued.

So here are some new recommendations, no matter what brand of pants you wear. A lot of knee replacement armor options also double as elbows, it just depends on the size/length/shape you're looking for. 

Above is the Seeflex family from REV'IT ($39-$44/pair). I like the RV14 and RV12 options on the far right for pants with really long armor pockets. A good example of this is Dainese. 

Their stock knee protector pockets are long, for their older knee guards. I find them to be too stiff, and lacking in shock absorption. The awesome thing about Seeflex is the entire piece of a shock absorber. This is far more comfortable to crash on and they're more ventilated as well. Additionally, they're CE Level 2, not Level 1 like the Dainese knee guards.  More flexibility, protection, ventilation and comfort. Well worth the upgrade.

Keep in mind the shape of Seeflex is deeper, so the space in your pant needs to accommodate a deeper knee space. They also wrap around your knees more which is great for me because I have skinny knees.

What's challenging about Seeflex is the width, if you're a woman and you're looking for replacement knee armor your pants may need a narrower piece of armor. RV10 may be too wide, depending on the brand. Keep in mind that RV12 is for exceptionally long knee armor pockets and won't work in most pants. 

Another option for Dainese pants that I also recommend is the Rukka D3O Air Knee Protectors ($39/pair). Thee are also CE Level 2, but it's a flatter piece so if you need a wider piece over your knee vs a more cupped/fitted piece (for smaller knees/pants) then you'll love this option from Rukka. 

Also great to match the length of Dainese knee pockets, super soft, flexible and ventilated. 

Here are a couple other options to consider; I like these because they're softer to begin with. They don't need time to warm up to your body. And, they're great options if you have smaller pockets: 

Armor should always fit so comfortably that you don't know it's there. If it's bugging you, it's usually because the gear isn't fitting you right (incorrect size/fitment/etc.) or it's cheap/fake armor that isn't molecular in nature (soft like these that harden on impact).

Sonic Tools is a Netherlands based company that makes solid tools. They have distribution in the US based in Alabama. 

This special edition Troy Lee Designs Filled Moto Toolbox includes a specific motorcycle-friendly kit that has unique tools like safety wire pliers, Torx AND Hex sockets. Gimme a 10mm hex and I'm a happy woman (almost everything on Goldie is a 10).

The box itself is solid steel (all one piece to be exact), and the all of the tools are European manufactured, and the quality is supposed to be fantastic based on various reviews we read on the interwebs. I especially like this feature: 

"All three drawers feature ball-bearing slides and are retractable and a front centralized safety lock."

Since the box comes totally filled, it'll cost you a little bit. $600 to be exact. So if you're ready for adult tools, these are a nice way to go.

Sena Bluetooth Remote Controls, 10R v. SMH10R

I love presents. Especially when they're for my motorcycle!  

While I was home, I upgraded my headset from the Sena SMH10R to  the Sena 10R. The reason I did this was because my younger brother wanted what I had. And I had been thinking about upgrading to the 10R so I could use these cool remotes. So what did he do? He gifted me a new 10R. Thanks little brother! (He's in his mid 30s but he'll always be my little brother) So that's how I ended up with these lovely remotes. Now the husband will have to upgrade shortly, so he can have a remote too. 

The headsets are virtually identical in form but the 10R has a few new features that may or make a difference to you. 

 My new Sena 10R. I know, looks just like the old one.    Both systems are Sena's "Low profile units, which are designed to occupy a minimal amount of space and provide the lowest profile on the side of your helmet. As someone who has no protection from the wind in the form of a windscreen or fairing, I value minimizing wind noise as much as possible. That includes wearing one of the best helmets on the market and one of the best headsets. Although I prefer the interface of the jogdial, as on the 10S, I didn't want any extra wind noise being generated next to my ear.  But, I also can't use the smallest unit, the 3S-W because the intercom distance is simply too short. Sometimes my husband and I aren't riding right next to eachother, so having more range to work with is really useful.  For the sake of simplicity, I'm going to refer to these units as the old and new. Old for the SMH10R and New for the 10R.  So what's changed?   The new unit has an improved feel and interface along the surface. This has always been the downside of the old unit. The fact that you don't have Sena's proprietary jogdial means you have to make more precise movements. The only reason you'd purchase either of these units is because you want a lower profile and are ok with not having the best interface (which is the jogdial) This can be annoying, as you reach up to adjust volume, intercom your husband, or maybe pause your music. And the thicker your gloves, the harder it is to be precise. The small ridges alongside the main Sena button are difficult to feel sometimes, even when I'm wearing my lightweight racing gloves.     Now when I reach up to initiate a command, it's much more obvious as to what button I'm pressing. The surface is also much smoother and made of a different type of material, a little softer not as firm, thus the color difference which explains why the new unit is greyish in color not black like the old one. The main Sena button is easily differentiated from the plus and minus since it's now a smooth surface button. I know immediately on contact that which button I'm about to press. It also makes it much easier to turn the unit on and off.  Aside from the interface change, the new unit has improved speakers, the same ones as the 20S and 10S. I wouldn't say they sound twice as nice, but do seem to be a little less tinny in sound.  Another change that I am thrilled about is the upgraded Bluetooth 4.1 profile. Whereas the old unit had 3.0. The reason this is important is because now I can use one of their remotes!  Remember, these units are NOT the best options in the Sena lineup when it comes to user interface. I would recommend a 10S before I'd recommend a 10R because they're annoying to use. But since I'd rather have the lower profile, I accept these drawbacks.  With the option of a remote, now I can initiate commands from my handlebar, or my tank bag, or wherever else I place a remote. They've released two remotes. If you purchase the 10R, you can buy it with or without the handlebar remote. That one is strictly designed to attach to a handlebar. I recommend mounting this one to the clutch side so it doens't get in the way of operating your brake and throttle. It can get in the way of reaching for your turn signals on the clutch side, but surprisingly, with my small hands I didn't find it to be an issue. I already have to reach over quite a bit to reach my signals and horn so adding the remote didn't make that much worse.  But I do like the other remote a bit better, called the RC-3 a bit better. This one can be clipped to anything, not just your handlebar.  With it's slim design, you can attach it to other things like your tankbag or jacket. Wherever you find it most convenient to reach for it so you don't have to reach up to your helmet.  Finally, the other major change is compatibility with the Sena App. I'm most excited about this option, because making changes such as firmware updates is so much easier.  I can also  manage various settings such as VOX controls, audio sensitivity and intercom pairings. Sena has another app called Ride Connected, not to be confused with this one which is strictly designed to manage your headset controls.   So there you have it, new buttons, a new look, a new remote system and a mobile app!

6 Days Til Christmas!

Yikes. Christmas is creeping up on us so fast. 

This small, portable Antigravity battery (MSRP $109.99) will not only jumpstart a motorcycle (or almost any vehicle) but it also doubles as the perfect usb charger for a smartphone. I always carry usb batteries when traveling on my bike, even on day trips. Why not have something that'll also give my bike a jumpstart in case something goes wrong? 

I'm planning on getting one of these to take with me on trips, just in case I need a jump. It can be hard to find a tow truck, or anyone to help you when you're out in the middle of nowhere, or on the side of the road. 

I could see this being useful for anyone on two or three wheels. 

9 Days Til Christmas, Kriega R20 Backpack

The Kriega R20 Backpack is one of my favorite moto accessories. I've never worn any other backpack that was this comfortable to ride with. Fits my frame perfectly, not too small and not too big, just right for daily essentials like lunch, a change of shoes and an ipad and a small purse. If you want something for a 2-3 day weekend then an R25 is in order. But for the daily commuter, this is a must.

The American Motorcycle Girls: A Photographic History Of Early Women Motorcyclists, ($33.25 as of 12/14/16) by Cristine Sommer Simmons, is an incredibly history of women riding motorcycles. I wish someone would gift this to me! :) 

Gracing the cover is also Dot Robinson, (founder/Motor Maids) who founded the oldest women's motorcycle club in America. A club that I joined over 3 years ago. 

The photos are beautiful as well as the stories, and for the woman who rides, she's going to LOVE this book. I think a lot of men who ride would enjoy this as well but for us, I feel it's going to be particularly special to see how the images of women riding has changed over the century. 

Especially when it comes to gear! We've come a long way, baby....
